With the support of Swaythling Housing Community Development Officer, Giv Thornton and Housing Officer Samantha Edwards, residents at Whiteley set up a new Residents Association. This took place on Tuesday 20 October at 7.30 pm. At the meeting residents elected their new committee, signed a Constitution and Code of Conduct. This Association will be known as the 'Whiteley Orchard Place Residents Association' and anyone living in the area of Whiteley included in Persimmon Homes Orchard Place development can be a member. These residents have lots of plans to preserve their environment and to keep it safe for families and the whole community. They will shortly be giving information on the newly set up Neighbourhood Watch Scheme which the Association is supporting.
Swaythling is helping with advice, funding and environmental projects.
Local residents raised a number of issues at the meeting concerning the maintenance of the land in the development as well as concerns about the balancing pond at the bottom of Maryat Way. This land is now being managed by a private company. Swaythling officers are working with the community and other agencies to investigate these matters and to pull together, with the Residents Association, a Neighbourhood Charter which should be ready for signature in the next few weeks.
