Southampton Cooks Up A Storm

Southampton Cooks Up A Storm

The launch of Southampton city’s own recipe book! Local residents, Swaythling Housing and Southampton City Council worked together to create `Southampton Cooks`, which is a colourful collection of recipes from around the world.

Each contribution is sourced from communities in Southampton and celebrates the vast diversity of the city. The launch took place on 12 December 2007. Following the emergence of a new community known as Chapel in the inner city and joint partnership working with Southampton City Council, a Cookery project was born. The aim of the project was to enable new and diverse communities to share their experiences and cultures through cooking. Women met on a monthly basis and cooked a dish of their choice to share with the group. These varied from family recipes to traditional national dishes.

This project led to the idea of involving more people across the city in sharing their favourite recipes by creating a cook book, 'Southampton Cooks'.

The book was launched by the Mayor, the Right Worshipful Stephen Barnes-Andrews on Wednesday 12th December, where all those who took part had an opportunity  to celebrate the book's production.

Vanessa Shahani, Communities Manager said, "The book has around 140 recipes, from starters to main courses and desserts, including a good selection for vegetarian ones. There are recipes ranging from apple crumble, to roasted nettles and Somali Crab meat stew."

Cita Jagot, Swaythling Housing Society added, "The project with local women, including some from the Chapel area, was really beneficial to all those who took part.  They came together and showed each other how to cook their national dishes. It just made so much sense to capture the ideas in a recipe exchange with a wider audience."

The book is available at a nominal cost of £4.95 from various outlets including Southampton's Tourist Information Centre, Kutis Brassiere, the Tiffin Club, October Books and the Fair Trade Shop in Shirley.

Swaythling residents can claim a free copy by contacting Cita Jagot on 023 8062 8000.
