Projects, funding & grants in Solent

We have a number of funding opportunities available for residents via the Kick Start fund (for young people aged 11-18 who would like to develop new skills) and the Community Fund (funding for community or voluntary groups to provide services for Radian residents).

Here is some information about projects we have recently funded.

Solent EBP Learn and Grow

learn_and_grow2A new project called Learn and Grow, funded by Big Lottery Fund’s Local Food Scheme, has been launched by Solent EBP with partner agencies in Southampton to help young people learn about horticulture and business.  They will be taught how to grow vegetables and how to market them. Chamberlayne College for the Arts has allocated land for this to happen at Weston. Radian, one of the partner agencies, has homes next to the school and is supporting the Weston project. Radian have granted the Solent EBP Learn and Grow project £1,500 to buy several hundred metres of path edging timber, a 100m roll of weed barrier and about 40 tons of stone to greatly improve access and aesthetics. From a health and safety point of view this means in the case of an emergency a fire engine or ambulance could access the site much easier. It has also made the site a lot more organised and looks much better overall for the residents opposite the growing area.

Up and coming footie star!

With help from Radian's Kickstart fund, a young resident from Millbrook has been able to join his local under 16's football team, Brendon66 FC. His application was approved, granting him £55 to cover his sign up fees. We wish him and his team all the best and many wins in the future.

Life Education WessexMCR_and_children_for_marketing_and_publicity

Life Education Wessex offer a fantastic teaching service for children aged 4-11. The aim of their mobile classes is for age appropriate health and drug prevention to be taught to children. The classes teach children about the dangers of tobacco and alcohol as well as how to keep their bodies healthy. Children love the classes as Life Education are lucky enough to have a life size model of the human body and an anatomical mannequin called TAM which talks to the children as they explore parts of his body. The children’s favourite is Harold the giraffe, Life Educations mascot who likes to conduct his teaching through singing. The Solent panel approved £1,500 to go towards more equipment and to keep the project going strong.

mcintyre_sensory_gardensMacIntyre Sensory Garden

The sensory garden is a project that hopes to encourage residents in Bursledon to maintain their gardens and appreciate what the garden has to offer. The project focuses on the sensory aspect of what the garden brings to you, what you can smell, see, touch, hear and feel. With £1, 500 granted by the Solent panel, MacIntyre hope to introduce all the different sensory attributes to residents such as vivid colours and fountains which will benefit all, especially those with visual or hearing impairment - to which the project will open a new way of enjoying nature in their back garden

Three Rivers Rail Partnership History Walks1464_1234719833_tb

If you travel by train in the mornings at Romsey, Chandlers Ford, Swaythling or St Denys, then you may have noticed a refreshments service being offered. This lovely idea is courtesy of the Three Rivers Rail Partnership who have been raising money to continue with their guided history walks around the Swaything area of Southampton. They have recently been successful in receiving a grant for £200 to go towards equipment, maps and guides for their walks. "We are delighted with the success of the walks!' Says Mark Miller, Three Rivers Community Partnership officer."I would like to thank Bob, who is an excellent guide and Radian for supporting the costs of our publicity."

The walks attract a lot of local people and offer an interesting opportunity to learn while keeping fit in their historic village.

Keep on Dancing

A Resident from Hedge End has been granted £155 from Radian's Kickstart fund to go towards her dancing lessons. She is now able to progress further with her dancing and achieve higher grades and awards. She's been dancing for a long time and it’s clear that dancing remains an important part of her life; she is currently learning tap, ballet and modern dance! Radian are happy to have supported her and wish her success in the future.

The scheme gives the children an opportunity to take part in organised activities which teach children about Anti Social Behaviour and give them a chance to get to know their local Police Community Support Officers. £200 has been granted which goes towards room hire and equipment for some of the fun activities the PCSO's organise for the children.
