Projects we worked together on...

Alongside our residents, we are involved in many community projects.  Here are our most recent:

Neighbourhood Watch

Residents in Pilgrim Place have recently set up a Neighbourhood Watch. They are using the Mansbridge Community Room for the meetings and have the support of the majority of the street. The group held their first meeting on Thursday 21st July.

Neighbourhood Watch is designed to target local crime problems and take action in partnership with the police and local authority to prevent them. Neighbourhood Watch started in the UK in 1982 and there are now 150,000 schemes running throughout the country.

If you would be interested in starting a Neighbourhood Watch in your street call 011 6271 0052 or visit www.neighbourhoodwatch.net.

Growing Your Own

Shinewell_Grow_Your_Own_-_FamilyGreen fingered residents in Shinewell Gardens, Millbrook found out how they could ‘grow their own’ vegetables at home. Staff from Radian’s Housing, Community Involvement and Grounds Maintenance Teams joined forces with the local Police to organise the event.

On the day, residents of all ages came to find out how they could ‘grow their own’. Radian’s Grounds Maintenance team helped residents to plant their choice of salad plants into grow bags or planters to take home.

As well as offering residents free grow bags and seedlings, a team of volunteers from a local Church helped to tidy up the area by litter picking.

Staff from Millbrook’s Safer Neighbourhoods Team advised residents about protecting their properties and gave out UV pens to mark personal items.

A minibeast adventure at Oakfield Gardens

bugeventwebsmallChildren at Oakfield Gardens, Shirley, were recently invited to explore an ecology site next to their home. Led by Ian Bailey from the Hawthorns Centre, they investigated different plants, hunted for minibeasts and made their very own bee habitats. The site has been designated for nurturing wildlife and will be left undisturbed to encourage plants and insects to move in. The children decided to call the site ‘The Bug Garden’, to celebrate the numerous ladybirds, millipedes, slugs and worms they found there.

Farmside Gardens Walkabout

Farmside GardensNeighbourhood Officer, Amanda Milford and Community Development Officer, Barbara Cooke visited Farmside Gardens in April and met residents during a walkabout. Residents asked questions about planned works including painting of communal areas and kitchens and bathrooms as well as sharing ideas about activities for children.

This was followed up by an open event at Anchorage Community Centre attended by staff from Radian and Portsmouth City Council and follow up visits to Farmside Gardens are planned in the near future to find out more about the views of local residents.

If you live in Farmside Gardens and you have any ideas for improvements to the area or activities you would like to see there, we would like to hear from you.
