Metering to help water shortage
The South East region has been officially classified as one of water stress, which means we don’t have as much water as we need – despite the British weather!
Because people on a meter tend to use 10 per cent less water, Southern Water is introducing meters for 92 per cent of its customers.
Water metering is a system that means you only pay for the water you use, rather than getting a bill that has been estimated, and Southern Water has a five year plan to install water meters across the South East, which started in late 2010 and is going strong.
More than 25,000 meters have already been fitted in Southampton, with installation teams working in the city before moving into other parts of Hampshire.
