Lighting Up Salisbury Town Centre

imagesOn the 17th December 2009 over three thousand people took to the streets of Salisbury to parade over a thousand lanterns through the city centre.

The Christmas lantern project involved people of all ages and abilities from across the rural areas of South Wiltshire. Communities came together through learning new skills in workshops and then showing their lanterns in a huge parade.

Lantern making workshops were held for residents in Archers Gate and Bemerton Heath. Over forty people attended to make the lanterns out of willow, tissue and sticky tape!

The parade was well over a mile long as it made its way to the great west doors of Salisbury Cathedral. Hot chocolate and buns were enjoyed outside the cathedral with a Christmas carol service to get everyone in the festive sprit.

A resident from Archers Gate said ‘My son and I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and it was nice that we were able to do an activity together’

The event was organized by Toozalii Community Arts. If you would like to get involved with the parade next year call Alex on 017 2232 4111 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
