Firefighters from Redbridge Fire Station, Millbrook organised an action packed afternoon for residents in Barters Close and William Macleod Way. Hampshire Fire and Rescue hosted the event on Tuesday 30th August with the support of staff from Radian’s Community Involvement Team. During the event children found out about how they could become a firefighter as well as learning more about the role that the Fire Service offers to the community.
Firefighters gave demonstrations on how to correctly unroll a fire hose and showed children how the hose was rolled up and stored on the fire engine. Amy Beams from Hampshire Fire and Rescue explained to children that “it is important that all equipment is stored in the correct place so that when firefighters change shifts the next crew know where the equipment is. If equipment is not put back correctly, firefighters can lose valuable time fighting a fire.” Budding firefighters then got the chance to have a go at using the equipment firefighters use to tackle fires.
Helen Humphries, Community Project Worker, who helped organise the event said “the event was a fantastic opportunity for children and residents to find out more about the role of the Fire Service. The danger of fires was explained in a way that allowed residents to have fun whilst finding out what it is like to be a firefighter.”
