Who better to open a play park than the children who will use it! After two years of planning, a celebratory opening took place in April 2008 for the Chapel Play Park in Southampton.
Within minutes of the Chapel play park being officially opened, it was being enjoyed to the full!
The play park was opened by Chapel's junior Police Communities Support Officers (PCSO), who are between five and twelve years old. The young PCSO recruits enjoyed being the guests of honour and wasted no time in testing the new facilities. Chapel's junior PCSOs' activities include helping to clear litter around the area and learning about safety both in the home and in the community, they also take part in activity days arranged by the police and fire services.
The new play park provides a safe and fun environment for local children. The park is located directly opposite the award winning Chapel complex to provide parents and carers with good visibility and enable children to play in a relatively safe environment.
Children flocked to the opening to test out the new equipment. They enjoyed a festive day out with face painting and entertainment provided by Swaythling. Senior PCSOs joined in the fun along with parents and staff. The sun even came out for the occasion!
Cita Jagôt, Project Worker for the Chapel scheme, believes the play park will be a very popular facility for the community. Cita said, The new park will be a wonderful asset for children and families. The park will provide a focal point for children to meet and also for families with young children. Chapel enjoys a very good community spirit and the play park will further strengthen this.
The Chapel developers, Persimmons, financed the park as part of their contractual agreement. Southampton City Council will maintain the new facility.
