A whole lotta fun!

Woolston and Weston Big Lunch a big success

mayor_flowersAs part of the Eden Project’s national ‘Big Lunch’ day, just over 200 local people turned up at Weston Shore with their picnics and blankets to join in the spirit of the day.  Carol Cunio, Mayor of Southampton came along to support the event and to talk to local residents.  Although the day started out being a bit overcast, by lunchtime it was lovely and sunny, a perfect Sunday afternoon.

peopleThe event was organised by Swaythling Housing Society and supported by Southampton City Council Communities Team, Raglan Housing Association, Hampshire Fire Brigade and local Police.  Southampton band Frayed Knot gave their time for free and played soothing jazz music throughout most of the afternoon. Eastleigh Football Club sent two football coaches along to give children the chance to hone their football skills.  The tide and wind didn’t play ball however, and Southampton Amateur Rowing Club had to resort to rowing machines on the shore for people to try out! For younger children there were inflatables, balloons, and the chance to climb on to a Fire Engine!  If anyone had forgotten their lunch box, Rkdia were tempting everyone with their burgers and hot dogs.

Information was available on housing schemes and looking after the environment.  Residents also had the chance to talk to their local police and police community safety officers.  Swaythling Housing’s community development officer, Giv Thornton was told by one resident that talking part in the event made them feel they belonged to a real community.  All together the day was a big success.
