A massive community tidy-up took place in the Mansbridge area in Southampton, which children from Mansbridge Primary School led. The initiative resulted in the collection of over 30 tonnes of rubbish!
The June 2008 tidy-up was organised by Swaythling's Housing Project Officer, Jay Mohindra. Staff from Swaythling joined staff and pupils from Mansbridge Primary school, local police and Police Community Officers and local councillor Jane Odgers on a giant litter-pick. The children were provided with litter picking kits and refreshments before getting to work. They made a big impression, splitting into small groups to cover every street.
A free rubbish collection service was provided for elderly and disabled residents.
After the tidy-up operation the children visited Swaythling's main offices to meet the directors. Here children asked questions about issues that affect their day-to-day lives on the estate. Questions covered issues such as anti-social behaviour, improving existing play facilities and reducing petty crime. The children also offered their own ideas on making improvements. Following the meeting the children were given a tour of the offices and working demonstrations of some of the grounds maintenance machinery.
Matthew (11) said, "It's good to look after the road and make sure there is no litter so that it is a nicer place. I've really enjoyed today."
